Coherence
and cohesion:
Text, in other words,
only becomes text when:
(a) Meanings are
related or tied together by linguistic devices such as repetition or linking adverbials
(referred
to as cohesive device or cohesive tie) ( مع بعضه البعض تماسك النص لغويا)
(b)
Meanings in a text make sense in relation to the
context of the text as well as the listener’s or reader’s prior experience
and cultural knowledge (this is what is meant by coherence). (ترابط النص بالمعنى والافكار والسياق)

Even where there are no recognisable cohesive signals
in a text, a listener or reader may use their cultural knowledge together with
their experience of language use to construct coherence.
حتى لو لم يكن هنالك أية أدوات
لغوية تربط النص ليكون متماسكا... فإنه يمكن للنص أن يكون مترابطا والقارئ أو
المستمع يستطيع الاعتماد على خلفيته الثافية وخبراته السابقة لبناء الترابط في
النص.

Coherence should be understood as primarily a
mental phenomenon, one that is generated by the experience of a reader or
listener rather than by the text itself.
عملية الربط هي
عملية ذهنية تتطور وتتولد من الخبرة أكثر من كونها تتولد من النص

A coherent text is the result of
effective use of cohesive devices. Such devices serve to ‘glue’ together the different meanings that make
up a text and help a reader/listener make sense of a situation.
النص المترابط هو نتيجة
الاستخدام الفعال لأدوات الربط

Linking adverbials (استخدام أدوات الربط الظرفية)
E.G: consequently create and/or mark the semantic relationship which writers or
speakers perceive as holding between the utterances they produce.

Other cohesive devices: reference signal that the identity of what is being talked
or written about can be recovered from the surrounding text.
(المقصود بها حذف اسم تمت
الإشارة إليه مسبقا في النص واستبداله بضمير يعود عليه الضمير هذا يطلق عليه (reference) معروفة أيا المدرسة حينما يضعون لنا قطعة وعليها أسئلة يضعون they أو it
أو أي ضمير آخر ويطلبون
الاسم الذي يعود عليه)
E.G: His great treatise on The Nature and
Causes of the Wealth of Nations was published in 1776. It was the result of 20
years of study.
