News Report

Rescuers piled up bodies along southern Asian coastlines devastated by tidal waves that smashed into nine countries, obliterating seaside coastlines and killing more than 120,000 people. Hundreds of children were buried in mass graves in India, and morgues and hospitals struggled to cope with the catastrophe.

The death toll mounted sharply after the 9.0 magnitude quake struck deep beneath the Indian Ocean off the coast of Indonesia. It was the most powerful quake in decades.

The waves sped away from the epicenter at over 500 mph before crashing into the region’s shorelines, sweeping people and fishing villages out to sea. Millions were displaced from their homes and thousands went missing.

Grammatical cohesion refers to linguistic methods that are applied to maintain the text as one thematic unit and is achieved through the use of: pronoun referencing, deictic referencing or ellipsis.

Pronoun referencing (substitution): referring to the same noun through the use of pronouns, e.g. 9.0 magnitude quake struck…it was the most powerful.

Deictic references are other means of achieving grammatical cohesion. In the text, endophoric (in-text) references are used to refer to persons, places or time in the text, e.g. Millions were displaced from their homes.
Endophoric references can be cataphoric (referring forward), e.g. It was the most powerful quake in decades, or endophoric (referring backward), e.g It was the most powerful.

Exophoric references are references to persons, places or times outside the text, in the situation. They are used to maintain coherence (implicit meaning in relation to situation, e.g. here, there, this, you). There are no exophoric references in the text (they usually characterize spoken mode or informal writing).

Ellipsis: .
- Subject/NP ellipsis: e.g. The waves sped away before [they] crashing into; millions were displaced [by quake] from their homes…
- Verb ellipsis, e.g. sweeping people and [sweeping] fishing villages out to sea.
- S + Aux ellipsis: e.g. Rescuers piled up bodies along southern coastlines [ which were] devastated by tidal waves……
